Questions And Answers On Music To Ease Stress

Graham asks…

Should I major in voice performance or musical theatre?

I’m 14 and music, specifically singing, is my passion. Before any of you say major in neither, I’ve already made up my mind about studying my passion, it’s more important to me then earning a huge paycheck. Okay, so I really love opera and classical music, I always have, and without training I already have a really strong upper range (can hit an F#). It would be a dream come true to sing in Romeo et Juliet, Faust, and the Marriage of Figaro. But it’s also a dream of mine to be Christine Daae in Andrew Lloyd Weber’s Phantom of the Opera as well as play Cosette in Les Miserables and even Johanna in Sweeney Tod. I’m not huge on the generic Broadway musicals like Bye Bye Birdie or the Sound of Music, it’s mostly just the more “Popera” stuff. So what should I do? I don’t want to major in musical theatre just for those kind of roles, but will operatic training be too much for them? Can I major in both? Do opera singers ever switch between Musical Theatre and the real deal? Help! I seriously don’t know what to do.
@-your face- I mean’t F# above the staff, that’s above top B#. Sorry I forgot to specify that. :) That’s the top note note in the Queen of the Night’s aria in The Magic Flute. It’s actually quite a high note for opera and actually isn’t used too much except for coloratura and some lyric soprano arias. ^_^

George answers:

If you are not really a fan of ‘broadway’ musicals, do not do musical theatre. Voice performance, that is classical voice performance, will allow you to sing in operas, and also to crossover into theatre. If theatre is another passion, take acting lessons, dancing lessons – these will be invaluable for both opera and musical theatre.

You don’t mention having a teacher, so if you don’t – GET ONE! NOW!

Caroline asks…

Is dancing or singing more important for me to learn?

this is all for theater; i want to get very good at acting, singing, dancing, etc. So I am a pretty good dancer (i can street dance, have a good sense of rhythm, and ive never rlly taken lessons, i taught myself) but my singing isn’t that good, just okay. I want to get better at both but lessons are so expensive. which can i teach myself and which should i splurge on lessons for? thanks! ive been doing all these things forever but i really want to get serious.

George answers:

It is ABSOLUTELY singing. Not to put down dancing, as it is very important too, but to sing in a musical can be incredibly damaging to a voice that is not properly trained by someone with experience. Many, many actors have had their careers ruined because they were not properly trained and as a result destroyed their vocal chords. So be very careful in the teacher that you choose (a teacher who sings choral music for instance would not be a good choice, while a trained opera singer who knows how to put incredibly pressure ontheir vocal chords every night would probably be just fine.)

John asks…

What would be some good questions to ask your vocal teacher to help development of voice?

I’ve been taking lessons from my vocal coach for a month now, it feels like I should be doing something more during the weeks such as exercises or something. What should you ask…that was an akward question

George answers:

First of all, your teacher must check your right breathing, correct use of diaphragm, use of the “mask”, “singing line”, which are your best vowels, voice range and kind, what´s best for “your voice development (opera, lied, musicals, commercial, country, etc.),not every could develop for the same, homogeneity, color, methods, etc. These are the basics.
Good Luck

7 Proven Ways You Can Use to Handle Stress.

7 Proven Ways You Can Use to Handle Stress.

Stress is amazingly persistent because we get used to feeling tight and tense that we would feel lost without it. At least for a while. Positive thinking is extremely useful in handling stress but it has to be backed up by  practical wisdom and incite or it tends to   fade away. Here are seven proven ways you will find useful in controlling stress:

1. Control your REACTION with these 7 simpler thoughts.

Your reaction to situations is critical to the way you are affected. When people try to unload their nervous comments and attitudes on you.

The first step is to remain alert when people try to weigh you down with their nervous comments and attitudes. You can repel their attack by simply changing the subject or don’t reply at all. Silence is golden. This puts them in a position to either walk away or move to another subject that may illicit a reply. As the saying goes, misery loves company.

Inner life author Vernon Howard writes, “An attitude of defeat in another person cannot touch you unless you carelessly accept it as yours. And there is no need at all for you to accept it. A quiet refusal to enter the battlefield is the perfect reply.’

2. Let go of the painful memories of the past.

Hating someone or holding grudges is like drinking poison and hoping that the person you hate will die from it. We need to remember that yesterday is gone and any actions or words are gone with it. You cannot take them back. Reliving those events and words become a poison to your own mind. Whether you are religious or not believe that their is a higher power, whatever you wish to call it. Those that have offended us are as susceptible to that power as we are. Let go.
The secret to success without stress is to live in the present moment.  NOW is so alive and energetic, so tangible and real, that painful grudges cannot “live” here.

3.Treat Negative Thoughts as a test. Observe and Understand Them.

Look into yourself constantly. When negative thoughts come into your experience, try to put yourself in the other person’s shoes and see how you would feel if you were on the other side of the issue. By observing your own reaction leads to better understanding which leads to stress free living. Pay close attention to misinformation and assumptions. If you are unsure of the meaning of a comment try to avoid jumping to conclusions. Take a second look from different angles. You may find that your first impression was wrong.

4. Enjoy a deep breath

People are often so tense with stressful thinking they barely breathe! Take brief breaks many times a day, even if for only 30 seconds! We can pause, take a deep breathe, look around and relax. Laugh often and smile at a passerby. You may be pleasantly surprised at the reaction you get. Most people will smile back. It is a good feeling to have when people smile at you
Suppose you feel tempted to give in to someone when you know you should not. Instantly fall into internal relaxation. Breathe away your tensions. Your habitually anxious and resentful attitudes will fall away like leaves from a tree. They will be replaced by a clear mind that reveals what is best for you.

5. Realize you have far better things to think about!

Thinking in the  old way will keep you in the same groove you have always been in. Old beliefs tend to keep you in the past. Seek change at all times, always reaching for higher ground. Things are changing so fast it makes your head spin. Why should old ideas and concepts remain useful if nothing is the same as it was? Your mental attitude will determine your life. Make sure your thoughts reflect what you would like to be. When these negative old movies start to play in your mind  tell yourself that you have better things to think about. You’ll feel much less stress and an abundance of new vitality as you reclaim the energy once consumed by these negative mental film clips.

6. Stay clear of negative  influences.

Negative influences  come from so many places. Like frantic people, misleading advertising,  untruthful politics. Don’t forget that unaware people want you to vibrate on their stressful level. The fact is they don’t even know how unaware they are simply because they give up their right and responsibility to think for themselves and swallow all the negative garbage that is constantly floating around out there. Of course, “Misery Loves Company.” Do not let them occupy your space. It is your duty, your noble mission in life, to live in harmony with your Heart — YOUR AUTHENTIC AND INTELLIGENT SELF. Though physically you may be in a stressful place, once you connect with your Heart you have the spiritual power to stay free inwardly. Stay clear of negative influences.

7. Refuse to make stressful or angry comments.

Stress   is like a snowball rolling down a hill that starts small then gathers size and speed. Therefore, we must stop it in its infancy. The best place to do so is BEFORE it leaves your mouth.
Here’s how you do it. You are about to say something angry or hurtful to another person. Once the statement leaves your mouth there is no turning back. Once you become aware of what you were about to say you make a higher choice and say something pleasant and cheerful instead.

You’ll instantly feel the trueness of practicing this exercise. Anger or stress did not succeed in dictating your speech. Your power of choice lifted you above its arrows. This is not the practice of phony niceness. It is the expression of true strength and authentic self-command It can only occur when your awareness is active, like the presence of a lighted lodge in the dark forest.

Conclusion:

The one supreme power that guarantees personal happiness is right thinking. This “right thinking” is based on practical wisdom. Try these seven methods and you’ll see a huge difference in your life.

Energy from stress

Energy from emotional and physical stress

Energy from emotional and physical stress  has a tendency to spread to people around you.   It can take away the feeling of being in your sanctuary when you need to feel relaxed and unwound. The good news is that you can get rid of that accumulation of negative energy.

You can create a haven that you can feel happy, secure, and productive in. The following suggestions should help.

Your personal space

Let’s first identify what your personal space is to you. For some, especially busy moms; the bathroom is the best space to retreat to for a few minutes of serenity. Whatever space you claim as your own, that’s the area we want to focus on.
Now we need to get rid of unnecessary clutter.  Make a date with yourself,  and go through each and every item. Would you REALLY miss it if you didn’t have it? If your answer comes short of a very definite YES, then pitch it, recycle it, or donate it. You’ll be amazed at how much lighter and free you ’ll feel once you are done!

When you get through cleaning up all the spider webs and dust pay attention to windows too. Having a cleaner space will help you breathe easier and is a much healthier environment for body, mind, and soul. Please make sure you spend a little extra time in heavy traffic areas.

Being able to focus visually on your favorite things will help encourage Happy Thoughts. Try to have at least one small item for this. What about the lighting, is it harsh, or too dim? That is easy to adjust with either higher or lower watts of light bulbs.  It’s a matter of personal preference and is  very inexpensive to adjust to what you like the best. Nothing beats natural light through a window during the day, but you don’t have to have a window to get the same effect. There are even light bulbs that offer a natural lighting feel in a room, though they are a bit more expensive. Candlelight adds some elegance and is excellent at burning away stressful feelings in a room.

How does your space sound?  Try different types of music to enhance the ambience in your room. New age and classical music both have regenerative properties that work wonders on your mental state. I would suggest staying away from the television, especially during high stress times. If you are set on the TV, try to pick the most positive programming you can find.

Energy from emotional and physical stress can be both negative and positive. Follow these suggestions and your experience will no doubt be positive.

Cheers
